One of the best parts about this project is that the supplies are easy to find while thrifting. Jen discovered two canvas prints at her local Goodwill and used them as the foundation for her project.

Instead of starting with brand-new art supplies, shopping secondhand makes it easy to experiment with creative ideas while keeping usable materials out of the landfill.

Create the "busted canvas" effect

After painting the canvases and adding decorative paper to the background, Jen prints her photos, secures them to the bottom canvas and creates the signature "broken" opening by cutting an X into the top canvas.

Rolling back each section creates the illusion that the artwork has cracked open to reveal a special memory hidden inside.

Layering the two canvases together gives the finished piece depth while making the reveal feel even more dramatic.
