Find a job that is right for you with Career Exploration at a WCC

Let’s face it, finding a job is HARD. Your entire career and everything you have to offer is reduced to a single piece of paper and an online job application. That might make you believe the key to landing a job is the perfect resume. That’s partially true. While a good resume is an important part of getting a job, the best way to find the career that’s right for you is to take a step back.

If you’ve been applying for jobs without getting interviews, or getting interviews without landing the job, the problem might not be your resume. Instead, you might be applying for jobs that don’t match your skills or you can’t describe how your skills make you the best person for the job.

That’s where career exploration comes in.

What is career exploration?

Career exploration helps answer the question, “What job is right for me?” It can help you find a career path, transition from one job to another, pivot into a new career, or simply help you understand how to explain who you are and what you bring to the job you want.

How career exploration works

Career exploration starts with an in-person conversation at a Goodwill Workforce Connection Center. One of our job specialists will talk with you about questions like:

  • What did you enjoy about past jobs?
  • What are you good at?
  • What kinds of work do you enjoy?

This conversation helps connect your skills, interests, and life experiences. When you understand what you bring to the table, it becomes easier to identify careers that fit your strengths so you can move from job to job searching toward a more stable career path.

We can also give you access to an online skills assessment. This tool includes a job quiz that helps show how your interests connect to real career options. From there, we can explore jobs that match your skills and interests. If there are current openings, you can click through and apply.

Career exploration questions

  • How does career exploration help me get a new job? Career exploration helps you find jobs that are right for you. By matching your skills and experiences with different types of work, we might be able to introduce you to a career you’ve never thought of; one that could be a start down a path to financial stability.
  • Isn’t easier to just apply to a long list of jobs? Career exploration can take a couple of hours, but it is a good investment of your time. Once you understand what jobs are right for you and why, you’ll submit stronger job applications and speak more confidently in interviews. That can help you land the right job faster.
  • How does career exploration help me perform better in interviews? Employers want to hire people who will care about their jobs, work well in teams, show up reliably, and handle the day-to-day demands of the job. When you take the time to work on career exploration, you will be able to explain why you are a good fit for the position and how your skills and interests can add value.
