How to Make a DIY Wedding Cake Card Box from Thrifted Finds

What You’ll Need

Most of these materials can be thrifted or found at your local craft store:

• IOD air dry clay (paper clay)
• IOD molds (florals, birds, decorative details)
• Quick and thick glue (clear drying recommended)
• Scissors or craft knife
• Cardboard (for template repairs if needed)
• Painters tape (to hold pieces in place while drying)
• Wood heart embellishment
• Dark wax (for finishing details)

Step 1: Prep Your Boxes

Start by cutting a slot in the top box for cards to slide through. Then, cut openings in the bottoms (and lids) of each box so the cards can pass through each tier all the way to the base.

Don’t worry if your cuts aren’t perfect — this project leans into texture and layered details, so imperfections will be covered later with paint and molds.

If any parts of your boxes are damaged, use cardboard to create a simple template and patch the area. This doesn’t have to be exact — everything will be refined as you build.

Before moving on, do a quick fit test by stacking the boxes and dropping a card through to make sure it travels from the top tier to the bottom without getting stuck.

Step 2: Paint Your Base

Apply a clay-based paint to the boxes. This type of paint provides strong pigmentation and texture, helping to cover any inconsistencies from the boxes or your repairs.

Once dry, go in with a mineral paint to seal the surface and soften the overall look. You can blend tones here to create dimension and give the piece a more “frosted cake” effect.

Step 3: Add Decorative Molds

Using air dry paper clay and decorative molds, begin building out your cake details.

Press clay into your molds, then attach the designs to the boxes using a quick, thick glue. Layer florals, leaves, birds, and other elements to mimic the look of piped frosting and decorative tiers.

Don’t be afraid to mix styles — variation adds to the charm.

Use painter’s tape to hold pieces in place while they dry, especially if they start to slide.

Step 4: Build Texture + Layers

Continue adding clay details across each tier. This step takes time, but it’s where the transformation really happens.

Paper clay will naturally dry and crack slightly, which adds to the vintage, cake-like texture. Instead of fighting it, lean into it — it helps create that “frosted” look.

You may need multiple packages of clay depending on how much detail you add.

Step 5: Add Personal Details

Incorporate a focal piece, like a wood heart or decorative emblem, to tie the design together. Place it on the front of the box for romantic details.

Secure it with glue and tape until fully dry.

Step 6: Paint + Finish

Once all clay elements are dry, paint over the entire piece to unify the design.

Blend colors to highlight the different textures and layers, and finish with a touch of dark wax to bring out the details and depth.

Step 7: Assemble + Style

Stack your boxes to create the final “cake” shape. You can secure them permanently or leave them stackable for transport.
