How to Upcycle Thrifted Frames into Cozy Winter Decor
Turn inexpensive Goodwill frames into cottage-style winter art with paint, decoupage, and a little creative magic from Rustic Rehabs.
When the Christmas décor comes down, winter decorating can feel a little… bleak. That’s exactly why Jen Dunne of Rustic Rehabs loves reaching for thrifted frames and turning them into cozy, creative winter art.
In partnership with Goodwill and Second Chance Studio, Jen shows how old frames can become fresh seasonal décor with just a bit of paint, paper, and imagination.
Why Thrifted Frames Are the Perfect Winter DIY
Frames are one of the best thrift-store finds:
- Affordable (many under $2)
- Easy to customize
- Endless styles and sizes
- Perfect for seasonal swaps
Instead of storing holiday décor away and staring at empty walls, these frame makeovers keep your space warm, charming, and personal all winter long.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Thrifted frames from Goodwill
- Decoupage paper (winter scenes, animals, cottages)
- Decoupage medium (or Mod Podge)
- Chalk or mineral paint
- Top coat (matte recommended)
- Sandpaper or sanding block
- Ribbon (optional)
- Glitter (optional, but very “chef’s kiss”)
- Razor blade or craft knife
- Heat gun (optional, for removing embellishments)
Step-by-Step: Thrifted Frame Makeover Ideas
1. Choose Your Frames
Look for solid frames with good structure. Don’t worry about color — paint fixes everything.
2. Prep the Frame
Remove backing, glass, staples, and any hanging hardware you won’t use. Clean everything well.
3. Add Paint + Distress
Paint frames in soft neutrals or rustic tones. Lightly distress edges to let layers peek through for warmth and character.
4. Cut and Apply Decoupage Paper
Use the glass as a template to trim your paper. Apply decoupage medium so you can reposition the paper before sealing it smoothly.
5. Seal and Finish
Apply a matte top coat to protect your work. While still wet, add glitter if you want subtle sparkle (or go bold — no rules here).
6. Reassemble
Once dry, reinsert your artwork and backing. Add ribbon if you prefer a softer hanging look.
Creative Variations to Try
- Winter cottages for cozy vibes
- Animals in vintage clothing for playful charm
- Snowmen or woodland scenes for Midwest winter humor
- Nature prints for calm, minimalist décor
- Glittered frames for light-catching texture
Jen’s biggest tip? Play. There’s no wrong way to do this.
