Gaining purpose and independence through individual placement and support: Billy's story
Demonstrating how work is the key to well-being
For Billy, the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program opens the door to possibility, purpose and independence.
Nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental health condition and more than two-thirds of people with serious
mental illness want to work. For many, work is key to their well-being, contributing to a sense of purpose and to
discovering paths of self-sufficiency and recovery.
Through the IPS program, Goodwill helps individuals with mental health and/or substance use conditions who are
working toward a job goal with educational support and in finding meaningful, sustainable employment.
As a person with a mental health condition and cognitive barrier, Billy received specialized support to overcome
transportation challenges and navigate entering the workforce with no prior experience. With the guidance of a program employment specialist, Billy took the first step to achieve his goal of living on his own – identifying his strengths and the best jobs to meet his unique employment needs.
Employment specialist, Leslie, connected him to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development’s Division
of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) to partner in his support and help match Billy’s interests, abilities and skills to different types of work. Leslie collaborated with DVR to obtain door-to-door transportation assistance so navigating directions, learning how to drive or using public transit would no longer be a barrier to work for Billy.
IPS employment specialists, like Leslie, personalize services for participant success, including matching them with the right employer and position.
Leslie, dedicated to Billy finding a job he’d enjoy, took him to observe and meet with area employers. They also
practiced interviewing so he could show up with confidence. With Leslie’s help, he secured a stock position with a local retailer that provides an environment where he feels comfortable and has a team that supports his learning. Within six months, Billy began his journey to independence, earning an income, and is equipped with a newfound hope for the future.
Leslie continues supporting Billy in sustaining employment, providing guidance to navigate the workplace. “It’s fulfilling to make an impact for the greater good of the community. If Billy’s experience influences just one person, who influences another, soon the whole community is affected by our work together.”
