How to Turn a Thrifted Denim Jacket into a Festival-Worthy Statement Piece
Festival season is the perfect excuse to get creative with your wardrobe.
Instead of buying something new, Cheryl Anderson of The Dotting Chick transformed a thrifted denim jacket into a custom piece of wearable art using fabric paint, dot art techniques, and a colorful mandala-inspired design.
The result? A one-of-a-kind festival jacket that's as unique as the person wearing it.

Why Start with a Thrifted Denim Jacket?
When you're creating wearable art, the right jacket matters.
For this project, Cheryl looked beyond color and focused on structure. A slightly stiffer denim jacket provided the perfect canvas, while the seams, darts, pockets, and collar became part of the overall design.
When shopping for a jacket, consider:
- Fit and comfort
- Fabric weight and structure
- Placement of seams and pockets
- Areas that can help guide your design
Sometimes the best canvas is already waiting for you at Goodwill.
Supplies You'll Need
- Thrifted denim jacket
- Fabric paint or acrylic paint with fabric medium
- Small mixing containers
- Dotting tools
- Chalk pencil or tailor's pencil
- Stencil or transfer design
- Wet cotton swabs for cleanup
- Transfer paper (optional)
Choosing the Right Paint
Painting on fabric requires a little extra preparation.
Unlike canvas or paper, denim is porous and flexible. Using fabric paint—or adding a fabric medium to acrylic paint—helps the design stay flexible and prevents cracking after wear or washing.
A few tips:
- Avoid paint that is too thick
- Avoid paint that is too thin
- Test your consistency before starting
- Work the paint into the fabric using a stylus tool
The goal is to create vibrant color that becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top of it.
Designing Around the Jacket
One of the most creative parts of this project is how the jacket's existing construction becomes part of the artwork.
The collar, pockets, seams, and darts help frame the design while creating movement throughout the piece.
Adding dot patterns along the darts can even create a visual elongating effect, helping guide the eye through the design.
Dot Art Tips for Beginners
New to dot art? Start simple.
As you create your design:
- Leave a small amount of space between dots
- Reload paint frequently for clean circles
- Use different sized tools to create variation
- Work in sections
- Allow paint to dry before moving to nearby areas
Small details can make a big difference.
Adding tiny white accent dots between colors can help brighten the overall design and make colors pop.
Personalize It with a Stencil
The back panel of the jacket is the perfect place to add a custom design.
For this project, Cheryl used a mandala stencil and transferred the design onto the jacket before filling it in with her own artistic style.
The best part?
There is no wrong way to do it.
Stencils provide the framework, but your colors, patterns, and embellishments make the final piece completely unique.
Mistakes Happen (And That's Okay)
One of the most valuable lessons from this project is that mistakes are part of the creative process.
A wet cotton swab can often remove fresh paint before it dries. Small spacing issues can be corrected with additional detailing, and many colors can be layered for extra vibrancy.
The key is not striving for perfection—it's creating something that feels personal.
Festival Fashion with a Second Chance
What started as a thrifted denim jacket became a colorful, hand-painted statement piece ready for festival season.
Whether you're heading to Summerfest, a concert, an art fair, or simply want to add more personality to your wardrobe, a thrifted jacket offers endless creative possibilities.
Your next statement piece might already be waiting at Goodwill.
