A Handmade Gift That’s Practical and Beautiful

Finding a meaningful gift doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune.

In this creative DIY from Cheryl Anderson of The Dotting Chick, thrifted glass bottles become stunning hand-painted olive oil dispensers—perfect for Mother’s Day, housewarming gifts, or simply adding personality to your kitchen.

This project combines:

  • Functionality
  • Creativity
  • Sustainability

And best of all? It’s beginner-friendly.

What You’ll Need:

  • Thrifted glass bottle
  • Bottle stopper
  • Alcohol prep pads
  • Dotting tools
  • Acrylic paints
  • Chalk pencil
  • Measuring tool

Step 1: Find the Right Bottle

Start by visiting your local Goodwill and looking for:

  • Glass bottles
  • Decorative oil bottles
  • Unique shapes with stoppers

Cheryl selected bottles specifically with gifting in mind, choosing pieces that could be both practical and visually appealing.

Step 2: Prep Your Surface

Before painting:

  • Remove labels
  • Clean thoroughly with alcohol prep pads
  • Make sure the surface is free from residue

This helps your paint adhere better and ensures a cleaner finish.

Step 3: Map Out Your Design

Using a chalk pencil:

  • Measure evenly around the bottle
  • Create guidelines for symmetry

This step is especially helpful for beginners.

Step 4: Begin Dot Painting

Cheryl uses:

  • Green
  • White
  • Red
  • Olive-inspired detailing

Beginner Tips:

  • Redip your tool often for consistent dots
  • Stagger rows for pattern
  • Smooth larger dots with a stylus
  • Use Q-tips to fix mistakes

“It’s never going to be perfect. It’s handmade with love.”

Step 5: Add Details

Once the main pattern is dry:

  • Add olive shapes
  • Add pimentos
  • Customize colors for your own style

Optional twist:
👉 Cheryl also created an avocado oil version for variety.

Step 6: Seal Your Bottle

Use:

  • Two light coats of glaze/sealer

Avoid heavy coats to prevent dripping.
