Finding Support Through Goodwill Programs

For Thomas, communication challenges made everyday tasks and social interactions difficult. He wanted more independence, stronger confidence and the chance to build skills that would help him thrive in the community. That’s when he connected with Goodwill’s Adult Day Services and THRIVE program — specialized supports for individuals with disabilities who are working toward greater independence.

“In the beginning sessions for THRIVE, Thomas was not very communicative,” says Deanna, Community Integration Instructor at Goodwill. “Instead, he would point things out or use hand gestures to communicate his needs and wants.”

How the THRIVE Program Builds Everyday Skills

THRIVE (Training Higher Readiness Through Independent Valuable Experience) focuses on helping participants strengthen communication, social skills, life skills and community involvement.

Through weekly sessions, Thomas began forming positive relationships with peers, practicing communication skills and participating in community outings. Over time, he became more vocal, more self-aware and better able to express his needs.

“Since working with Thomas, he has demonstrated phenomenal change,” shares Deanna. “He is now more vocal in expressing his emotions, advocating for himself and discussing his needs and wants.”

Supported Employment: Helping Thomas Prepare for Work

Alongside Adult Day Services, Thomas receives job support through Goodwill’s Supported Employment services, funded by the Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR).

Thomas' personalized job coaching services included:

  • One-on-one job development
  • On-the-job coaching
  • Help learning workplace routines and expectations
  • Continued encouragement as responsibilities grow

With this support, Thomas secured part-time employment as a lobby attendant at a local fast-food restaurant — a role that helps him practice communication skills, responsibility and independence.

With ongoing guidance from his job coach and the confidence gained through THRIVE, Thomas continues to grow. He is proud of his work and excited about the skills he’s gaining.

“In THRIVE, Thomas continues to shine and shows great dedication to accomplishing his goals,” says Deanna.
