What Does Goodwill Take?

FAQs to help you plan your Goodwill donation

Last year, Goodwill Greater Milwaukee & Chicago accepted over 3 million donations. Revenue from the sale of these items helped fund job training and placement programs in our local area, ultimately serving over 21,000 people.

While Goodwill does accept a wide variety of items as donations, we are often asked about donations of certain items. Here are some of the most common questions we are asked about donating to Goodwill.

Does Goodwill take books?

Goodwill Greater Milwaukee & Chicago gladly accepts donations of all types of books on any subject. These books are sold in your local store, on our ecommerce platforms and in our outlet – where they are sold for only $1 each!

Does Goodwill take couches?

Although we don’t directly accept donations of couches, they can be included in donation pick ups scheduled through ReSupply or Chicago Furniture Bank. Items that can be sold in our stores are donated to Goodwill, and the couch will be donated to another nonprofit.

Does Goodwill take bikes?

Yes, Goodwill accepts donations of all sizes and types of bikes. Bikes are sold in our stores and at our outlets. If a bike does not sell, we work with a recycler to dispose of it properly.

Does Goodwill take mattresses?

If you schedule a donation through one of our donation pick up partners, you can include a mattress in the items to be picked up. Although Goodwill does not accept mattresses, we will be able to accept other items in your donation, and the mattress will be donated to another nonprofit.

Does Goodwill take pillows?

Yes, we accept all types and sizes of pillows, which are sold in stores and at our outlets.

Does Goodwill take hangers?

Goodwill accepts both plastic and metal hangers. Both plastic and metal hangers are sold in stores. Metal hangers that are not sold are recycled.

Does Goodwill take stuffed animals?

Goodwill does accept stuffed animal donations. Stuffed animals are sold in our stores and at our outlet stores.

Does Goodwill take electronics?

Yes, Goodwill accepts a wide variety of electronic items including cell phones, gaming systems, laptop and desktop computers and non-CRT TVs. If you are interested in donating a phone, computer or gaming system, be sure to prepare your device for donation.

Does Goodwill take donations on Sunday?

Goodwill store and donations centers are open and accept donations 7 days a week, including Sundays. Find your nearest store and donation center so you can make sure we are open and available to assist you with your donation.

How do Goodwill car donations work?

We partner with CarEasy, a company that specializes in vehicle donations. They will handle your generous donation and ensure the value of your donated vehicle is given to Goodwill. Find out how to donate your car to Goodwill.
