ASL interpretation at Goodwill Great Lakes

Kat Jasper holds a rare position: a full-time American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter.

While most organizations do not employ full-time interpreters and instead rely on contractors to provide occasional interpretations, Goodwill is committed to providing an inclusive employee experience.

“I am proud that we offer access to communication through interpreting, as well as provide education about Deaf culture, the American Disabilities Act and how the hearing members of this company can be more inclusive,” Kat says. “For many people who work here, if Goodwill did not exist, they may not be able to find employment in such a supportive environment that allows them to work independently.”

Kat started as an ASL interpreter intern with Goodwill in 2011 and was hired full-time in 2018. “I knew this was a place where I could see myself developing my career and advocating for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community,” Kat says. “When a full-time opportunity became available, I jumped at the chance to be part of this wonderful organization.”

Today, Kat is the manager of Goodwill Great Lakes’ ASL interpreting department and provides ASL/English interpretation for approximately 40 employees who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

Kat and her team create videos and other content to increase accessibility for employees and provide Deaf culture training to all employees to foster an inclusive and equitable culture. She’s learned over the years that everyone’s perspective is valid and that when we take the time to listen to another perspective it allows us to open our minds and build relationships.

“It is humbling to be bestowed the responsibility of facilitating communication for our staff members and employees who are Deaf and hard of hearing,” Kat says. “I enjoy facing the challenge of providing the best
communication and advocacy for the people who put their trust in me.”
