Empowering LGBTQ+ voices at work
Goodwill's LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group in action
According to a McKinsey report, 66% of employees believe employee resource groups (ERGs) can be an effective way to foster a sense of community within the workplace. In addition, 90% of organizations use ERGs to help new hires achieve a smooth transition during the onboarding process.
In 2023, Goodwill launched three groups – Multicultural, Disability and LGBTQ+ – creating safe spaces for employees to advocate for underrepresented voices and drive positive change inside and outside of the organization.
Spotlighting Goodwill's LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group
Goodwill’s LGBTQ+ ERG serves as a platform for enhancing the visibility and representation of LGBTQ+ - identifying employees and allies. The group strives to elevate employee engagement, foster a nurturing environment and enhance organizational culture.
As a longtime ally of the LGBTQ+ community and mother of a lesbian daughter, I am dedicated to becoming part of the ERG. It’s important that everyone can show up as their authentic self, and I know my fellow co-leaders are committed to developing a safe space for employees to share their thoughts on how Goodwill can improve their working lives. I lead a store and donation center and my experience with the ERG has taught me more about the community, which helps make me a better leader,
In addition to creating an inclusive and diverse workplace, members are encouraged to take positive action within the communities Goodwill serves. LGBTQ+ ERG members took part in June Pride parades across Wisconsin and Illinois, celebrating a commitment to building cultural awareness and greater visibility within the organization.
“I joined because it’s important to empower the LGBTQ+ community within Goodwill and ensure members have a place and space to show up, advocate and connect with others while feeling valued for being their authentic self. I’m grateful to play a role, along with our entire ERG leadership team, to bring this group to life and build upon our culture around diversity, equity and inclusion,” shared Julie Deming, LGBTQ+ ERG Co-chair.
