Finding New Ways To Learn And Grow
Although Ricky has been employed for several years in the community, he wanted to continue to work on his communication, reading and writing skills. THRIVE (Training Higher Readiness Through Independent Valuable Experience) helps individuals reach specific independence goals.
Ricky has been supported by Goodwill for more than 20 years. He has been participating in Adult Day Services, which provided him access to THRIVE.
“I love learning how [to do new things],” Ricky shares.
For Ricky, THRIVE helped increase his confidence and motivation to participate in various community integration activities, goal-centered curriculum, and various skill-building activities. He has increased his engagement in fun activities and conversations with his peers, public service workers, librarians and Goodwill’s Community Integration Instructor, Deanna.
“I’m glad he was able to join THRIVE to strengthen specific skills and build his confidence – he is open to trying new activities in the community and advocating for himself,” shares Deanna.
Ricky has shown tremendous growth in participating with his peers in various THRIVE activities along with communicating his wants and needs.
“Knowing where Ricky started compared to today is just amazing. He can advocate for himself and is asking questions. Once he found his interests, it really brought out his personality, and he was more engaged. I’m able to see him relate things that he has learned in THRIVE to other activities or conversations with his peers at Day Services,” shares Deanna as she reflects on Ricky’s experience.
